Note From the Editor

Benjamin Franklin said, “Sin is not harmful because it is forbidden, but it is forbidden because it is harmful.”

Our lives are made up of continuous streams of actions, reactions, and consequences. For every decision we make and every action we take, there are either rewards to gain or repercussions to face. In my experience, work life is not exempt from this. In the work place, “sins”, or the mistakes that we make either by commission or omission, typically result in harm; whether it be harm to a project, harm to our team members, or harm to ourselves.

This week, our Newsletter is designed to help protect us from sin in the workplace. We’ve highlighted Seven Deadly Project Management Sins to look out for, how to avoid developing wasteful habits, what happens when PMI Certification is misused, and which upcoming user conference it would be a sin to miss. Though the subjects may be touchy, we are passionate about success and believe that exploiting these mistakes can help us all be more aware and, as a result, get our work done more efficiently.

Do You Trust the Greatness of Your Project Team?

The Seven Deadly Project Management Sins

Seven SinsWhether you know them as the Seven Deadly Sins, the Capital Vices, or the Cardinal Sins, the final version of the list consists of wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony. Most of the struggles we face as project leaders originate with the following “sins”…

Sin: Being Wasteful

Wasteful ComicI don't think anyone likes to waste their time or efforts. So, it's puzzling to me why so many organizations insist on wasting their most precious resource—their people. Regardless of the tools or methodologies you employ, anything that can better align people to the right work at the right time will help your teams enjoy their job, gain satisfaction from whatever they are doing, and allow them to feel like they are contributing to something bigger than themselves. Here are six tips to help you avoid wasting team members…

Sin: Misusing PMI Certification and Losing Sight of the Value of Experience

Is certification one of the skills a good project manager needs? Recently, Derek Huether (author of The Critical Path blog) wrote a post entitled, Failing the Exam that highlighted some known problems with PMP Certification. In conversations I’ve had with Derek, it seems that he and I agree that certification, although a potentially valuable measure of whether or not a person is prepared to manage projects, is being misused by companies, hiring managers, and even some project managers…

Sin: Not Attending AtTask WorkOut 2011

As a customer, I had the opportunity to attend one of AtTask's annual user conferences. With the upcoming WorkOut 2011 just around the corner, I thought I would share my perspectives on the conference. If you need assistance deciding if you should attend or justifying it for approval, hopefully this will help…
